Custom GPTs Are Being Retired: How to Keep an AI Assistant on Your Own Website

If you built a custom GPT for your business, or planned to, you may have seen the notice: OpenAI is retiring them.

What OpenAI says

According to OpenAI's help center, OpenAI is retiring custom GPTs and recommends plugins as the replacement, and it describes how existing GPTs can be migrated. The dates and the details depend on your ChatGPT plan and may change, so read the source before you plan around them: Custom GPT retirement and migration FAQ (OpenAI help center).

Why this matters if you used a custom GPT for customers

A custom GPT lives inside ChatGPT, so the people using it have to be inside ChatGPT too. If you shared one with customers, you depended on a product and on a place you do not control. A chat on your own website works differently: it lives on your pages, and your visitors ask their question where they already are.

What an assistant on your own website looks like

Here is how OneType does it, so you can compare any option the same way.

It lives on your pages. You add one script tag before the closing body tag of your site (or in your builder's footer code), and OneType shows a live check the moment your site first loads it. Visitors do not sign in anywhere.

You choose where it runs. You list the domains where the chat may run, up to 50. The chat does not start on any other site, even if someone copies your script tag.

It answers from your content. The agent answers from your pages, your files and your saved answers. Each sentence that uses your content carries a number like [1] pointing to the page or file it came from (cited answers), so visitors and your team can check it. By default it answers only from the sources you added and is told never to state a price, date or policy they do not contain.

It stays current. OneType re-reads your website on a schedule set by your plan and updates only what changed. You can press Sync now on a source at any time. If a re-read is blocked for a moment, the last good version stays live.

A person can step in. Your team can press Take over on any open conversation. The AI stops answering and the visitor sees that a person joined.

If you already wrote instructions and files for a custom GPT

The material you prepared is not lost. The text of your instructions and your reference files (FAQs, policies, price lists) is the kind of content a website assistant needs. With OneType you add your website address, then add files and text on the Knowledge page (PDF, Word, Markdown, plain text or CSV), and the chat answers from them with the same citations as your web pages.
