How to Train an AI Chatbot on Your Website

Your website already answers most of the questions visitors ask. The hard part is that people have to find the right page. Training an AI chatbot on your website means the chatbot reads your pages once, remembers what they say, and answers visitors in plain words with a link back to the page. This guide walks through it step by step.

Step 1: Enter your website address

Add a Website source and enter your address. OneType looks at your sitemap and follows the links on your site to find its pages, and you can watch the count grow while it works. If you only want part of the site, add paths to stay under, like /docs/**, or paths to skip, like /blog/**.

Nothing is read into your chatbot yet. First you decide what it should learn.

Step 2: Choose the pages that matter

OneType groups the pages it found by section, such as /pricing, /help or /blog. Tick a whole section, open it to pick single pages, or search by address. Tag, category, author and archive pages are marked "Usually not useful for answers", so you can leave them out. A counter shows how many pages you picked and how many your plan still has room for. Confirm, and reading starts.

If your site is built with JavaScript, that works too: when a page shows almost no text, OneType opens it in a real browser and reads what a visitor would see.

Step 3: Add what is not on your website

Product manuals, return policies and internal notes often live in documents. On the Knowledge page, add Files (PDF, Word .docx, Markdown, plain text or CSV), or add a Text source and paste a short policy or a list of opening hours. Your chatbot answers from them with the same citations as your web pages. Private content that sits behind a login cannot be read from your site, so upload it as a file or paste it as text.

Step 4: Test it before visitors do

Open the live test and ask the questions your visitors ask most, one at a time, in the chat design you picked. Try a question your website does not answer, to see how the chatbot handles it. If an answer is not what you expected, that usually points to missing or unclear content on your site rather than a design problem. Fix the content, let the chatbot learn it again, and ask once more. The readiness score gives you a number from 0 to 100 measured on your own content, with a button to fix each miss.

Step 5: Keep it up to date

Websites change. OneType re-reads your sources on a schedule set by your plan, and you can press Sync now to read a source again straight away. Only changed passages are updated. If a re-read hits a firewall or a temporary block, the last good version stays live. Uploaded files and pasted text do not change on their own, so edit them or upload a new version when they change.

When you are happy, add the chat to your site with one script tag just above the closing body tag (or in your builder's footer code).
